Why Most Diets Don’t Work (For Long)

It’s that time of year again… Everyone is working hard on their New Year’s resolutions, and hopefully making some progress. For millions of people, losing weight is their number one resolution each year, and that’s why you’re probably seeing a variety of fad diets touted in the news right now. But did you know that 95 percent of diets either don’t work, or those who lose weight on them quickly regain it afterward? Why is that?

There can be a few reasons for diet failures, but most of the time just two very important factors are at play:

  1. The “diet” is not reasonably sustainable for any length of time
  2. Losing weight is a science, and without professional guidance we’re all just guessing at what we should do.

Do you want to eat that way for the rest of your life? Of course not… But that means you can expect the weight to return before long.

As for the second problem, it’s important to remember that our bodies are all very different from one another. Even if a plan worked for your neighbor or relative, it might not work for you, because your body type and metabolism are different. You need a plan that is catered to your specific needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all plan that …. doesn’t actually fit all.
